Has the third party in American national politics been historically unsuccessful in elections?
Typically known as a "two art system", the American system has historically had two major political groups with candidates competing for office in federal elections. To begin with, the first two parties originated from the debate over the approval of the Constitution, which included the Federalists and the Anti-federalists (Hirano & Snyder, 2007). In recent time, the Democratic and the Republican parties dominate the federal elections political realm. Almost every state-level or federal elected official in America is either a Democrat or a Republican. In fact, in the State Congress, one member of the House of Representatives is neither a Democrat of a Republican. Every other member of the House and Senate belongs to a Republican or a Democratic party. The third party in the American politics has historically been unsuccessful.
The same characteristics of the American political system that encouraged the success of the two-party system have served as a discouragement to the emergence of the third parties. The success of the third parties that dare to emerge has always been short-lived (Hirano & Snyder, 2007).
