The Major Functions of the IS Department
A typical IS department functions include planning to ensure the effective use of information technology in accomplishing the organization objectives. IS department main role is to develop, operate, and maintain the information technology infrastructure, enterprise applications and also manages outsourcing relationships (Kroenke, 2015).
Organization IS varies due to several factors such as the market environment, the industry itself, the organization culture and the size of the organization. In other words information system contains data and records of activities that are processed to information, these includes the manual or automated process. Most of the time there term IS is associated with computer related information systems which only contains the technological part of an information system (Kroenke, 2015).
IS departments have a technology office to investigate new information system technologies and analyze how an organization can take advantage of such technology. The current analysis of technology is the web services and how the organization can use it to accomplish their goals (Kroenke, 2015). The technology department is headed by the chief technology officer who sorts new ideas and product to determine the relevant ones that can be incorporated into the organization. For one to be a chief technological officer it requires a comprehensive understanding of information technology and his ability to envision how the new technology will bring positive effects to the organization (Kroenke, 2015).
There is a difference between information systems and information technology; Information system department assist the organization to achieve its goals while information technology is concerned with techniques, design and procedures used by computers.
