1 The term status is a broad one and is used to refer to the position of an individual in a society. It refers to what an individual is as parent, student, or child. However, people tend to have multiple statuses at any given time. Therefore, status is important in a society because it has a set of duties, rights, behaviors, and obligations that people are expected to adhere to in the society. There are two types of status: ascribed status and achieved. Ascribed status is beyond control of an individual. It is not earned but people are born with it, such as sex. Achieved status is based on merits due to people`s abilities, skills, and efforts (Scott, 2014).
2 Nancy Adler (1983) says that "Cross-cultural management explains the behavior of people in organizations around the world and shows people to work in organizations with employees and client populations from many different cultures". Therefore, in a global working environment, having a multicultural team is becoming the order of the day. Thus, the cultural status of the manager will influence his interactions with the other members of the organization. The implications that status have on international managers is explored below.
The western culture has really embraced equality in its society, thus any leader is not perceived to be above the rest. For example, an international manager in the western culture will encourage punctuality of the workers since they belief that time is precious and must be treated so. Lateness, absenteeism, and inefficiency issues are highly discouraged in the western culture. Since status gives an individual some responsibilities and duties in the society, it also influences on attitudes shared by individuals from a specific country as well as shapes their behaviors and beliefs about what they think is important to all.
