“When it comes to privacy and security, I’m reminded of folks who drive to the airport without their
seat belt on and then worry about the plane crashing.
Planes do crash on very rare occasions but not nearly as often as cars. And when driving, there are
things you can do to increase your safety, whereas when flying, there’s not much you can do to
protect yourself but we do rely on the airline industry and government regulators to do all they can
to protect us.
Likewise, when we’re online, there are things we can control and things we can’t. For example, we
can control the passwords we use and what we say in social media. But sometimes we’re victims of
other people’s carelessness or malice, such as when a service or a retailer gets hacked or a
government employee loses a briefcase containing a laptop with people’s unencrypted personal
information.
And then there are those other privacy breaches that result from deliberate policies of service
providers and advertising networks to harvest user information for a variety of purposes, ranging
from targeting advertising to conducting market research.”
Larry Magid, (2013), “Online Privacy and Security is a Shared Responsibility: Government, Industry and You”, Forbes,
12 February 2013.
Compare and contrast the respective roles and responsibilities of the Australian government,
businesses and individuals in maintaining data privacy.

Introduction
With the wide range of benefits associated with the Internet-based economy and online resources, maintaining and protecting the privacy of the data and information has developed as a new concern in the field. Internet privacy involves enhancement of privacy and security level of personal information and data stored and published through the internet. Data protection is a collective role for all stakeholders including the business, individual and the government which basically involves a variety of techniques, factors, and technologies to enhance or enable protection of sensitive and private data, communication and preferences as discussed herein.
Every individual or stakeholder has a role to play to ensure the protection of online data thus enhancing cybersecurity. For instance, the Australian government through the Digital Transformation Agency involved in online service management ensures the protection of the privacy of the data of the government users. The Office of the Australian Information Commission (OAIC) through the private management framework is responsible for ensuring that personal information is managed in an open and transparent way through implementation of reasonable practices, procedures, and systems that comply with the Australian Privacy Principle (APP) (cite) (Australian Government: The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, 2017). The government, therefore, is expected to be protective in the establishment, implementing, and maintaining privacy processes to enhance good governance.
The Australian government establishes a leadership commitment to a culture of privacy which helps in the improvement of business productivity and development of efficient business processes (Abbott, 2016). Through government initiatives, the government enables the creation of a culture of privacy that values personal information thus enhancing cybersecurity. The government institutions and systems are involved in responding to complaints and requests regarding data security. This involves how the collected data is held, transmitted, and a person can request for correction of personal information in case the available data is inaccurate, outdated, or incomplete or even detects a threat in the security of the shared information or data. The Australian government is therefore responsible for hosting online services in the government accredited facilities through maintenance of physical, technical, and administrative safeguards to enhance protection of the privacy of the data and personal information collected.
Businesses are obligated to ensure privacy and protection of data and information of their customers especially the data operated online. Cybercrime is an issue that has affected many businesses that are not able to protect their information and data properly. For a healthy running of all forms of nosiness, the privacy of the customers’ information remains vita...
