Nursing recruitment has become crucial to plug the gap in nursing shortages, and hospitals are increasingly focusing on retention strategies, while allowing nurses to have a bigger say in the patient care (Haynes, 2008). As hospitals look to attract more nurses they have increased perks, but this has led to higher turnover rates as nurses seek better working conditions (Haynes, 2008). However, it is not only the compensation benefits that influence nurses’ decision-making, as they increasingly look into the working conditions. In particular flexibility and autonomy are factors that affect nurse decision to choose specific workplaces over others.
One of the strategies to improve recruitment and retention is to undertake training with the nurses placed under the mentorship of professional nurses. When the nurse collaborate with their mentors who are experts in their field then it is easier to encourage their participation.
