Pipelines have proved to be the most convenient, safest economical and efficient mode of transportation over time. It is commonly used to transport products such as petroleum, water, natural gas and milk among others. Solids as well can be transported using pipeline after they are converted into slurry (Marcus, Leung, Klinzing, & Rizk, 1990). This mode of transportation is a new development in most countries and have caused relieve to the accumulating pressure on the old transportation modes such as roads and railway lines. Following are advantages and disadvantages of pipeline transportation.
Pipelines are advantageous in that they are more suitable for gases and liquids unlike other means of transportation. They are also gainful due to the fact that they can be laid even under the water ad most difficult terrains. Above all it needs very little energy and maintenance thus making it cost effective. Finally they are arc safe and they are environment friendly.
