As an organization grows, it takes up new projects or initiatives to increase the performance, profits and enhance competitive advantage. Such requirements lead the management to adopting changes that will lead the organization to growth and achieve ultimate goals (Tidd & Bessant, 2013). The global market changes every day and for an organization to remain relevant, changes are inevitable. The examples of changes in the current market concern new technology, new products, or new performance review systems according to the changing needs of the customers. For this to happen, the employees need to adapt to the changes introduced within the organization to match up with the ones dictating the market place. In view of that, this paper seeks to discuss the essence of change management and its ultimate goal, by analyzing how the British Airways has managed its change management successfully.
Definition of Change Management
According to Malone (2014), change actually happens to the employees first, for the impact to be felt in the organization. Change management, therefore, is the discipline of monitoring, adapting, and supporting the employees of an organization. It may be in the form of many strategies, for example, training the employees about the new technology acquired. According to Birkinshaw (2013), change is not always welcomed in organizations. It may meet resistance, thus good communication among other approaches to change management are required.
Goals of Change Management
The ultimate goal of change management is to get the employees to embrace the changes implemented so that they can positively impact the organization (Tidd & Bessant, 2013). It is important to adapt a change management resource team to assist in the implementation of a change management plan. Once the employees embrace the changes needed, it is easy and almost automatic that the goals of the organization can be achieved. For example, a change in the adoption of a new technology may mean more production, more profits or easy accessibility of files.
Successful Change Management in British Airways
As important as changes are in the growth of an organization, it may also be difficult to implement (Hayes, 2014). If correct strategies are used, change is also achievable and can be successful.
