The primary aim of Robert Herbert in this book was to portray impressionist painting in the societal aspect. Accordingly, he wanted to point out how the painting is part of an art that influence the lives of people in different ways. From the onset of this writing, Robert acknowledges the research and studies has brought out the history of Impressionism. Robert also wanted to debunk the proposition of the formalist, which mainly relied on sociocultural context. According to Robert, Impressionism is a representation of modern art as it encompasses the modern urban culture. For instance, he alluded to the culture of leisure activity. The wrings of Edgar Degas, Eduard Manet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir are in contrary to the findings of Robert. His flair in writing stem from a fascination with cafes, concerts, picnics as well as holidays trips along the shore.
Modern art played a critical role in the transformation of Paris. According to Robert, history should pave the way for progress in every aspect. History means not only old buildings but also the traditional subjects of the arts. The author is advocating for the need to cast historical issues to embrace the modern way of life. In this regard, Robert is not castigating the historical arts, but he is advancing the techniques from the historical background to the current form of expressing things through arts.
