Analysis of Magritte Painting, "Son of Man"

Essay Instructions:

PROGRESSION #1: ANALYTICAL RESPONSE ESSAY From the main syllabus: For your first essay, you will analyze a work of art or cultural artifact in order to demonstrate something significant about it that you did not initially perceive. Ideally, this shift in significance will occur as you write your essay, but you can also stage a prior encounter, as long as you provide specific details that help your reader engage with your experience. In addition to an image of the artwork/artifact, you should include a concept borrowed from one of our readings or sourced from a reference database on the library website. You may use 1-2 additional sources that give us more information about your artwork/artifact, such as short critical essays, museum wall/web text, or artist interviews, but these are optional (though recommended if they help clarify your response or make it more accurate). Your main task is to follow up an inquiry into your chosen work, using your experience of it to explore a newly emerging set of ideas. Through this work, you may even come up with an idea you want to develop later in the course! Focus of progression: problem, idea, representation Texts Required (2 to 3+):  A work of art or cultural artifact (analyzable, multi-dimensional image, structure, space, etc.)  Any reading assigned for this progression AND/OR a short reference piece that helps you apply a concept to your chosen work (from CREDO or a credible article in the public domain)  Optional: a text that helps you expand your thinking (again, it should be clear why you are using this text—you should provide clear attribution and engage with the text’s ideas, rather than just pasting in a quote). If you would like to include personal experience for this essay, your own narrative can be considered an additional text—but be prepared to seek out additional models (I can point you to these in our conference if needed).

Originally, when I saw the Magritte painting "Son of Man," I had thought about it as a twist on the typical story of Adam and Eve and how they originally ate the fruit of knowledge and were cast out of the garden of Eden. I saw these two pieces as parallels to each other, one being the original story and the painting being the modern repetition of that same story. Not only that, but I feel like everybody has that "Son of Man" in their lives… That fruit of knowledge dangles in front of them, blocking their view and making them blind. I suppose that Adam had a choice in whether to bite into that fruit or not.
However, I'm not so sure that the Man in the painting did. It's really up in the air with how the painting is displayed. There are no facial features or body language that would indicate how the Man is feeling or the circumstances behind the situation that he is put in. The web series offers a rendition of the Son of Man. This version of the Man can be seen in the first episode. It starts with him looking into a window of sorts, perhaps to show that the painting itself is simply a window into his world. Suddenly, a pink shapeshifting creature of cosmic horror appears in front of him. Similar to his painting, the Man doesn't emote very often.
In fact, he only seems to be confused at the sight of this ungodly being. The being's name is Mischief, a representation of the devil throughout the series. Similar to the story of Adam, the devil introduces himself to Adam and has the ability to shapeshift. Mischief, after introducing himself, tries to strike up a conversation. Despite these efforts, the Man doesn't talk. In fact, he doesn't talk at all throughout the entire series. This is yet another reference to how the Man in the painting has no features or emotions. Any indication of who he is or what he is feeling is masked behind the fruit that dangles before him. This is when it's revealed that Mischief knows more than he's leading on, that something is off about the Man and seems unnatural. What this is is unknown to us, the audience, until later on in the series, which we'll get to later.
Thereafter, Mischief shapeshifts into a bus and offers to take the Man wherever he desires to go. This is another parallel, showing him offering the opportunity of knowledge by becoming a form of transportation. In the followi...
