Massive interior continental glaciers in the North Pole have developed and retreated many times in the past. There have been six significant glacial periods in history with the late quaternary glaciation occurring 34 million years ago. Holocene is the current interglacial epoch that began at the end of the Pleistocene era (Peltier and Drummond 460).
Many factors have likely lead to the Pleistocene ice age. Several of these issues are associated with climate change, changes in the ocean, and atmospheric circulation.
