The debate relating to speech codes continues up to date according to with advocates arguing that these are necessary in order to prevent harm that would come from hate speech and other types of alterations directed towards individuals targeting their racial, cultural, sex or any other identifying aspect of a person’s background. Advocates of speech codes argue that hate speech has the ability to cause psychic distress, alienation or feelings of anger among other negative outcomes. On their part, critics of these codes have held that by allowing the codes to be effected would amount to breaching the right to freedom of speech.
