Kara Walker is aware that ghosts can hurt somebody because history still exists and does not go away. In Walker’s view, the fantasies that whites are better than blacks signifies the power separating the two. In the year 1882, Domino Sugar Company is built at Williamsburg, and by the 1890s, it was producing half the sugar consumed in the United States. In the year 2000, the company experienced aprolonged strike of laborers protesting for their wages and working conditions.
The factory is now demolished, and a white sculpture of seventy-five and a half feet long made out of bleached sugar. The 35-foot high and 75-foot long white statue has a Mammies’ character, which represents a black woman of South America who looked after the white kids.
