The American Dream highlights that anyone can achieve their goals and upward mobility in the US as there is equality of opportunity, rights and freedom for all. However, the American Dream is overemphasized and RZA's view is that there are unique circumstances in the black community that restricts them. “When you get locked up in there a few years later, you learn. You learn civics, government, law and science every day, especially science because the projects, like jail, is a science project, one that no one expects you to leave” (RZA and Norris 2). The courthouse and county jails are nearby and represent the Black experiences where those who are incarcerated are expected to stay there regardless of their crimes and the school-to-prison pipeline where there are high incarceration rates of blacks. The fallacy of the American Dream is that there are obstacles to many people that others choose to ignore and even when there are opportunities, there are unique challenges for African Americans. The loss of hope reflects the belief that the people do not believe there will be a better future and even if their economic status improves they will be discriminated against, since the reality is that there will still be disfranchisement and inequalities.

Despite growing up in the projects of Staten Island, New York RZA was hungry for knowledge and did not let his circumstances stop him as he learned about chess, religion, mathemati...
