Functionalist view of social stratification.
Functionalists believe that every aspect of a society exists for a particular purpose. Theorists such as Kinsley Davis and Wilbert Moore argued that some positions are more important than others. Thus, hierarchical categorization provides great rewards for a society as the inequalities making up each level contribute to the success of the entire society. Moreover, having a categorized society means that individuals have to work hard to fit in various positions thus, reap the rewards of each position (Chambliss & Eglitis, 2013, p. 160).

Conflict theorists observe the concept of social stratification as the taking advantage of some people by others. According to theorist Karl Marx, capitalism nature drives a society by dividing individuals as either owners or workers (Chambliss & Eglitis, 2013, p. 162). He further asserts that the owners provide workers the means and benefits enough for their survival but utilizes exploitation and oppression to control them.
