Police corruption is an international problem. In most countries around the world, rates law enforcement officers are among the most corrupt. Graft can take many forms such as paying bribes for traffic violations, bureaucratic and administrative corruption, political corruption, and conspiring with criminal groups in trafficking drugs and weapons. However, they are bound to comply with strict rules and procedures and are morally required to commit in maintaining law and order among citizens (Caldero and Crank 2010).
According to a case study by a troubled agency, the impact of police corruption can result in mistrust. The misconduct makes it difficult for police to perform their primary task within the community they are supposed to serve, thus weakening ethical standards in society. Therefore, reforms are necessary to curb police-related corruption. The bribery claims can be addressed through the dismissal of corrupt officers and changing the internal affairs officials that benefit from the chains of corruption. Police officers are ranked among the least paid in most countries, therefore increasing their salaries and benefits can reduce the attempt to commit corruption or taking a bribe (Light 2014). Institutional reforms such as the restructuring of police service, and limiting police to only law enforcement can help address bureaucratic and administrative corruption allegations. Regular education for officers can enhance professionalism, knowledge of rule of law, and adherence to human rights can help in addressing the high level of police corruption, high incidences of police killings, and conspiring with organized criminal gangs among the police service (DCAF 20...
