An individual cannot inherit both copies of homologous chromosomes from one parent because germ cells always contain a pair of homologous chromosomes from the mother and that from the father. During meiosis, the diploid number of chromosomes (2n) is halved (n) and for this reason, this process is known as the reduction division (Starr & McMillan, 2010). Oocytes and sperm cells contain a single set of 23 chromosomes and it will require another set from each parent to form a germ cell containing the diploid number of chromosomes. It is only during crossing over that new combinations of genes in a chromosome are created and this process occurs during metaphase I.
