Summary
The article shows that although a high number of women attained education and labor force experience there was still a great gender wage gap in the 1990s and 2000s. In this study, Cha and Weeden (2014) used data obtained from 1979 to 2009 to show that the convergence achieved in gender gap in terms of hourly pay in the three decades was associated with the increased prevalence of returns to overwork. The overwork effect helped in offsetting the wage-equalizing effects. This was mainly significant in managerial and professional occupations in which working for long hours are a common norm. The findings of the study are important to current research because they help in illustrating that old forms of gender inequality can be perpetuated by new modes of approaching work.
