Consider the following case study:
A 52-year-old African American male presents to an urgent care center complaining of urinary frequency and nocturia. The symptoms have been present for several months and have increased in frequency over the past week. He has been unable to sleep because of the need to urinate at least hourly all day and night. He does not have a primary care provider and has not seen a doctor in more than 10 years. His father died when he was a child in an automobile accident, and his mother is 79 years old and has hypertension. The patient has no siblings. His social history includes the following: banker by profession, divorced father of two grown children, non-smoker, and occasionally consumes alcohol on weekends only.
To prepare:
Review Part 13 of the Buttaro et al. text in this week’s Learning Resources.
Review the case study and reflect on the information provided about the patient.
Think about the personal, medical, and family history you need to obtain from the patient in the case study. Reflect on what questions you might ask during an evaluation.
Consider types of physical exams and diagnostics that might be appropriate for evaluation of the patient in the study.
Reflect on a possible diagnosis for the patient.
If you suspect prostate cancer, consider whether or not you would recommend a biopsy.

The urinary frequency is a major genitourinary disorder that is prevalent among adults and is associated with several systemic disorders that include kidney infections, diabetes, prostate cancer, enlarged prostrates and urinary tract infection. This disorder has several serious implications, an aspect that demands a thorough evaluation of a patient (Buttaro, et.al.2013).When conducting an evaluation of a patient; it is significant to consider the patient’s medical, personal, and family history before establishing the need to conduct certain diagnostic tests and exams since the benefits of these exams may not outweigh the risks. In evaluating a patient complaining of urinary frequencies and nocturia, the following questions may be asked during the evaluation:
1 What were the health, age and causes of death of some of the patient’s blood relatives?
2 Is there a family history of individuals suffering from high blood pressure, heart diseases, diabetes, or stroke?
3 Can the patient provide a family tree to establish and obtain data on the history of the family?
4 What are the patient’s current medical prescriptions, and over-the-counter herbal products, medications and vitamins?
Types of Physical Exams and Diagnostic Tests for the Patients
In order for health providers to diagnose urinary frequency and nocturia, there is need to keep a voiding and fluid diary that records how much water or fluids the patient takes, how regularly and often they visit the bathroom, medications that the patient is taking, urinary output and any symptoms of urinary tract infections (Buttaro, et.al.2013).
