Majority of Nepal’s citizens are not connected to electricity and either use firewood as the source of both light and warmth. At eighty-eight percent of the citizens using firewood, there is already an effect on its environment leading to heavy soil erosion. Furthermore, only around 14 percent of the Nepal’s population lives in the urban areas. The national per capital for the 9.2 million households is estimated at $260 which means an adult earns between 1$ and 3$ n a day. The situation of the people in Nepal therefore warrants this drastic use of the forest cover in an “unlimited” way. Globally, the number of people estimated to be using biomass oil is 2.4 billion people which makes a third of the world’s population. Further, a third of the population is also does not have electricity. Heavy usage of the oils is associated with the pollution of air in houses. In some cases, these fires results to the death of people and also causes premature death (Perreault & McCarthy, 2010).
To curb this problem of both pollution and usage of too much biomass fuel for keeping warm and also providing light, Bright Light Innovation introduces the Starlight Stove. First, the Starlight Stove is expected to reduce the consumption of firewood as they cut down the usage by 50 – 70 percent of the normal cookers. On the other hand, the stove can be used for lighting as it contains a rechargeable battery used for lighting at night. The lighting gets energy from the stove so it basically converts the heat it produces to lighting (Perreault & McCarthy, 2010).
