NIBCO’s ‘Big Bang’: An Sap Implementation
NIBCO; a company dealing with valves and fittings, implemented SAP ERP system with the aim of making the business performance better. ERP is a set of IT software that are particularly developed to meet the needs of firms, in such a way that the firm becomes more integrated. Through this integration, the functions of ERP provides for better IT support and improved system performance in business activities (Brown, & Vessey, 2001).
The major reason as to why NIBCO decided to implement the SAP ERP system, was to make the organizational swiftness and overall performance better through improved Information Technology (IT) support. The company’s previous systems had lacking integration; as different departments used different systems that involved redundancy in their functions, hence waste of resources. After implantation of the SAP system, NIBCO expected reduced similar and redundant functions and an improved efficiency of the various processes through integrating its departments. Moreover, NIBCO wanted to revolutionize its business activities, by making it easier for consumers to relate with the business and vice versa, as well as the firm had financial fire power to acquire and implement the SAP ERP system (Brown, & Vessey, 2001).
The approach is known as ‘Big Bang’ because it included a full implementation of the SAP ERP system in all of the company’s facilities at a go. In most firms, the system is acquired in stages; a particular department within the firm at a time. The big bang approach has both advantages as well as disadvantages.
