1. How does Gregor feel about his job? What evidence in the story reveals his feelings?

2. What is Gregor’s role in his family? Why does he have so much responsibility? How is this role likely about to change?

3. What circumstances in Gregor’s life might have caused him to feel dehumanized, even before the metamorphosis took place? How does Part 1 establish the beginnings of a potential social commentary as much as it establishes a nightmare personally for Gregor?

4. Some critics suggest that Gregor’s growing appreciation of his antennae and his loss of interest in milk hints at Gregor’s loss of humanity. Do you agree or disagree? Explain your reasoning. What other ways does Gregor appear to be “adjusting” to his condition? Why do you think that Gregor needs to crawl under the couch to feel comfortable?

5. How does Gregor’s room change as Part Two moves along? How does Gregor respond (his response goes through a couple of stages) and why is this significant?

Choose ONE of the prompts below and develop a brief essay utilizing specific textual evidence and complete citation packages in response.

1. To what extent is each of these characters responsible for Gregor’s death: Gregor’s family (Father, Mother, and Grete), Gregor’s employer, and Gregor himself? Provide specific textual evidence to support a brief paragraph of argument regarding each person or group's culpability.

2. How does The Metamorphosis embody existentialist ideals? Perform a "reading" of the story by analyzing specific characters, symbols, and plot developments in order to explain how the narrative suggests an existentialist view of the world.

3. How might The Metamorphosis provide an allegory for Otherness? Perform a "reading" of the story by analyzing specific characters, symbols, and plot developments in order to explain what the narrative suggests about the function of Otherness in the world. How might we connect Gregor’s experience of Otherness with the experience of other groups that have been Othered, whether historically or in our own times?

1 Gregor is exhausted by the demanding nature of his profession. He doesn’t enjoy his work; this is evident in his thoughts one morning. He thinks to himself that he never has enough time to build relationships or have a regular meal. In his thoughts, he plans to leave his work once he has earned enough money to pay off his parent’s debt (Page 15-17)
2 Gregor is the sole provider for his family’s needs. This responsibility weighing on his shoulders follows the deteriorating health of his elderly parents; his mother has asthma while his father is aging and has become clumsy. Although he has a sibling (a sister), she is too young to unburden him with some of these responsibilities. This role is about to change when Gregor metamorphosed. He will no longer be the breadwinner and his father, mother and sister will be forced to find work to become independent.
3 Before the metamorphosis, Gregor felt dehumanized because of the unappreciation he received from his family. He felt that his family viewed him more like a money-making tool rather than a beloved son or brother. He not only paid the bills but also the debts that his parents owed his employer.
4 I agree with the critics. The loss of humanity of the protagonist in Metamorphosis goes beyond the changes in his physical features to those of an insect. His changes are also psychological. In hi...
