Cheever's utilization of symbolism is so effective that it takes intense synthesis to grasp the text's primary theme. The act of swimming seemingly symbolizes a sedentary life. The subject itself is most likely to evade the public's attention because the often-busy lives leave little room for philosophizing. Thus, the swimmer is the individual who passively goes through the events of life and ultimately suffers the consequences of irresponsibility, missed opportunities, and strained relationships.
