A Response Paper to “Vasilisa the Beautiful”
For each of the response papers, you must pose a central question of your own based on the reading, incorporating the reading into your paper. Your question must be posed in the first paragraph of the paper. In the paper itself, you must respond to that question with evidence from the text and from research.
• Think of your response as a shorter, less formal academic paper: in it, you will be asking a central question and responding to it with an argument supported by evidence. Ideally, you will also conclude by addressing the significance of your argument. In response papers, I'm looking for an interesting central question; a thoughtful, intelligent response; and clear, correct writing, as well as thoughtful research.
• In each response paper, you will also relate a material not assigned for the class, such as a text you came across in your research, a work of art, a film, etc. Although you must write about at least one assigned text in each response paper, you may relate that text to other materials.
In the PDF, only the first 12 pages are "Vasilysa the Beautiful", so you don't have to read the rest of the pages.

A Response Paper to "Vasilisa the Beautiful"
"Vasilisa the Beautiful" outlines the story of a beautiful woman whose mother passed away and was left to live with a stepmother and two stepsisters. One of the dominant characteristics of Vasilisa is obedience. The stepmother and stepsisters occasionally mistreat her, but she does not retaliate. She does not plead for help when her father sends her on an impossible journey, knowing it would be futile (Afanasyev, 60). Even when the stepmother and stepsisters lock her in a room for three days with a dead man, she does not complain. She comforts herself by singing songs and saying prayers, and the dead body remains lively like her because it is enchanted to do so. When Vasilisa realizes that she was able to bring the dead man back to life with her faith, she travels from one house to another, bringing people back from the dead (Kolesnik, Maria, et al. 30). She is resourceful, hardworking, and fair. She always tries to live up to her responsibilities and focuses on the future rather than looking for revenge. She is noble and has a strong will and determination, and this shows that she is not being forced into being obedient.
Throughout the story, Vasilisa does not have any friends except her doll, which plays a major role in helping he...
