Personal Analysis on Previous Condition by James Baldwin
Previous Condition, by James Baldwin, depicts the life of a young black gentleman. Peter lives in a time when everyone is aware of who they are and where they are because of the color of their skin. As a result of his skin pigmentation, Peter feels discriminated against by the rest of the world. He refuses to accept himself in the black community since the white society does not welcome him. He experiences dread, rage, embarrassment, and isolation due to his inability to accept and attempt to fit into the white community. Peter expresses his contempt for his ethnicity throughout the novel.
In the narrative 'The Previous Condition,' Baldwin uses focalization, which aids in the story's context. It allows readers to empathize with the character by accompanying them on a journey into the character. As the first-person narrator, the author has used the primary character, Peter. In the story, Peter is also portrayed as a protagonist.
