"The Imp of the Perverse." & "The Black Cat" Reaction
The Black Cat by Edgar Allan Poe is one of the best stories I have read recently. One of the main reasons that have made it outstanding is that it has addressed a mental condition that most people have shied away from addressing. Furthermore, this story has reminded me of various instances in my life. For example, I have negative thoughts about harming myself and others I love. This urge is usually strong such that it is, in some instances, hard to control it.
I would easily relate to the story since it had many similarities with what I was previously experiencing. For example, similar to the narrator, the feeling is usually strong that it is hard to control (Poe). For example, despite living on the first floor, I would climb to the sixth floor, contemplating jumping off the roof. Similarly, there were various instances where I took a knife and contemplated harming my partner. In most instances, rather than accepting that I had a problem, I blame other people and the surrounding circumstances, like the narrator could blame alcohol and the cat's behavior for his actions (Poe). The other similarity I had with the narrator was that the more I tried to force myself not to think about it, the more I thought deeply about it.
