Book Review: The Leadership Challenge
The pursuit of effective leadership has contributed to the discovery of theories, practices, and traits, among others, associated with effective leadership. Individuals and organizations have conducted research on factors that contribute to effective leadership to create leaders who will influence followers to achieve the desired outcome. Kouzes and Posner (2012), in the book “The Leadership Challenge,” share practical insights into the practices that leaders can use to turn challenges into opportunities. Below is a summary and evaluation of the most and least helpful ideas shared in the book in relation to pastoral care.
Short Summary
Kouzes and Posner are experts with experience in the area of leadership. They have conducted extensive research on leadership and share their findings in “The Leadership Challenge” book. It is about the leadership practices that influence others to "transform values into actions, visions into realities, obstacles into innovations, separateness into solidarity, and risks into rewards.” Kouzes and Posner analyze a case study of one successful leader in combination with thousands of other leadership experiences and identify the five practices of exemplary leadership: Model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, encourage the heart, and enable others to act. The book also reveals that leadership is a relationship between leaders and followers founded on credibility.[. James Kouzes and Barry Posner, The Leadership Challenge: How to Make Extraordinary Things Happen in Organizations (San Francisco, CA: Josey-Bass, 2012), 12. BIBLIOGRAPHY \l 1033]
The authors provide ample support for the five leadership practices in ten chapters, each chapter discussing a leadership behavior/commitment that can help leaders positively influence their followers to achieve great things. These commitments are; clarifying values, envisioning the future, setting examples, enlisting others, taking risks, strengthening others, searching for opportunities, fostering collaboration, celebrating wins, and recognizing the contributions of followers. The book's final chapter calls for everyone to take responsibility and become effective leaders. It emphasizes that leadership concerns everyone regardless of title or position; leadership is about what one does and the relationship with others. This closing chapter establishes that leaders impact their followers, knowingly or unknowingly, because they are constantly being watched. It is vital that leaders set a good example and positively influence those looking up to them. It is the only way to make an extraordinary difference.[. Kouzes and Posner, 346.]
Evaluation of Ideas
I found this book to be quite insightful. It is a book I would recommend to anyone, even if they are not in a leadership position. The ideas shared by the authors can be adopted by parents, group leaders in a class discussion, and anyone who has someone else looking up to them for guidance and direction. The ideas I reacted to the most were: the power of setting an example, the power of turning challenges ...
