The book “The Rest is Noise’ was written by Alex Ross examines 20th-century classical music. The book helps us understand how the classical music at the time influenced and reflected the cultural and political landscape. In this paper, we shall summarize chapter 12 titled “The Passion of Benjamin Britten”, whereby the author narrates the life and work of a British composer referred to as Benjamin Britten who had an outstanding voice of art. However, his relationship with society and culture was complicated despite his remarkable influence on the classical music world.
Summary
The chapter starts by introducing the artist Britten who was passionate in composing besides his enthusiastic commitment to social and political matters. Britten’s passion for music correlates to his life as he underwent challenges and wins during his time. The author introduces us to the artist's early life which describes a young talented music talent. Britten would compose music at a very young age which was clear also to his family members. The parents supported the child's talent notwithstanding his father working as a dentist. The mother was an amateur singer with music talent and by supporting their child, Britten was able to be more creative with ambitions to grow in his
