Book selected: Hacking Leadership: The 11 Gaps Every Business Needs to Close and the Secrets to Closing them Quickly.
Description of the Book and Selection
In his book, Mike Myatt offers leaders a straight-forward book that seeks to help enhance leadership in the 21st century. Myatt identifies several gaps that can help leaders, including leadership, purpose, future, mediocrity, culture, talent, knowledge, innovation, expectation, complexity, and the failure gap. He offers an in-depth discussion of the gaps while offering working and action-based solutions to help organizations address these gaps. The general idea is that all leaders suffer from gaps or blind spots that can hinder their progress and execution of leadership goals.
I chose this book because of its action-based approach to solving the problems created by the gaps. Often, books will highlight issues or problems in the field of business. They will then proceed to offer vague and unrealistic approaches to attending to the problems faced by businesses today. However, in his book, Myatt maintains a realistic approach that every leader can borrow to help enhance their leadership efforts. Also, the account is not limited to leaders, but individuals can also borrow a leaf from the book. I felt like the book also gave me an opportunity to assess myself and make a few adjustments to my life.
Part 2
Main Concepts and Relevance to Contemporary Organizations
The main concepts presented in the gap entail gaps or the leadership problems that every leader faces. The gaps as outlined above entail leadership, purpose, future, mediocrity, culture, talent, knowledge, innovation, expectation, complexity, and finally, the failure gap. These form the main concepts presented in the book.
The book's relevance to contemporary organizations lies in its ability to help point leaders in the right direction regarding their effectiveness and influence in their organizations. In an instance in the book, Myatt highlights the book's relevance to organizations by noting that knowing which items or elements to focus on helps guarantee success. Therefore, through the 11 hacks, leaders are given a blueprint to help them take actionable steps to close any leadership gap they could be facing.
Strengths and weaknesses of the concepts.
Myatt takes an action-oriented approach and offers leaders a blueprint on what they can do to enhance themselves and deal with gaps. But, to successfully implement the concepts and ideas discussed, one must be courageous enough to veer or, as Myatt indicates, "break the norm" (2013). Further, by offering leaders a realistic take on gaps in leadership, Myatt endears the book to many potential readers. ...
