Entry 1: The Educational and Mental Health Needs of Syrian Refugee Children
Summary
The piece majorly addresses how children are in quest of mental health support due to poor education and mental health problem. Mental health correlates to different wars that the children have been exposed to since 2013. Additionally, the children's status as refugees interrupts their education since they have difficulty accessing schools. The primary mental health which impacts the children is PTSD, with approximately 45% suffering from the disorder (Sirin & Rogers-Sirin, 2015). The summary correlates to different topics such as the Impact of mental health in education and the effects of PTSD among children.
Critical Review
The piece is comprehensive and successfully integrates mental health and education among refugee children. However, the primary missing aspect is a strategic solution to the mental problem. According to Gadeberg et al. (2017), PTSD is common among children exposed to war or any traumatic event such as domestic violence and should be addressed as early as possible to reduce possible effects. Therefore, I would improve the problem by describing in detail other mental effects other than PTSD. I would also specify a strategic psychological solution such as a reliable national program to the situation.
Discussion Question
The main discussion would be, 'what are the mental problems of the Syrian refugee children, and how does it impact education?' The question is crucial since it summarizes all the main arguments in the essay, such as increased exposure to PTSD, low access to education, and appropriate solutions (Sirin & Rogers-Sirin, 2015). The question also allows more research on mental health among Syrian refugee children.
Entry 2: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis on Prevalence of Mental Illness
Summary
The piece is critical since it analyzes different types of illness among asylum seekers and refugees by considering adolescents and children. Higher populations of refugees are below 18 years (Blackmore et al., 2020). The piece summarizes the data between 2003 and 2018 and identifies that the common mental illness among children and adolescents are anxiety disorder, oppositional defiant, depression, and PTSD. The piece further identifies three major mental problems, including anxiety, depression, and PTSD. The identified disorders expose the children to difficulty in accessing schools. The summary relates to topics such as mental health effects and social integration.
Critical Review
The piece comprehensively describes asylum seekers' and refugees' mental health. It openly exposes the issues that such children go through. The analysis is also valid and reliable since it uses significant sources. However, it does not provide the relationship between educational performance and mental disorders. According to Merten et al. (2017), mental disorders impact academic performance among adolescents and children. Therefore, I would improve the piece by correlating each mental illness to impacts on education and specific solution. The approach is necessary since it would regulate and safeguard the young refugees and asylum seekers from menta...
