In his piece “Signature Killer,” David Stone examines Caravaggio’s unique depiction of John the Baptist. The article’s primary goal is to dissect this painting and explore its rich symbolism in light of Caravaggio’s life (Stone, 2012). This portrait of John the Baptist by Caravaggio dates back to his later years, circa 1602. The Co-Cathedral of Saint John is a religious and historical landmark in Valletta, Malta. The fact that Caravaggio completed this painting independently elevates its value. The author investigates Caravaggio’s character and motivations for wanting to join the Knights of Malta. Caravaggio aspired to be a hero to be pardoned for his wrongdoings. He yearned for a fresh start, far from his current predicament and the consequences of his past actions.
Caravaggio had difficulty joining the Knights of Malta. Because of his prominence, this occurred. However, Caravaggio’s acceptance was greatly aided by the fact that the Grand Master, Alof de Wignacourt, recognized the artist’s talent. Caravaggio justified his membership by using his artistic skills to make works that praised the order and its ideals. The person thought being a painter would help the Knights of Malta and connect with the organization’s goals. After becoming a member of the order, Caravaggio’s life went through a time of significant changes. The person in question lived in Malta but got into many fights, leading to him being arrested and then running away. His life and career were going through a rough patch.
