Ethics and Literature Book Report
1 In the play Antigone by Sophocles (Goheen 1), Antigone and Ismene are both sisters to two brothers, Polynieces and Eteocles, and all are children of Oedipus. The two brothers, Polynieces and Eteocles, have killed themselves in a fight over the throne of Thebes. Eteocles refuses to give the crown to his brother Polynieces as had been directed by their father. The two brothers then pick a war, Theban civil war in which both dies in.
2 Creon decrees that Polyneices’corpse should not be touched or buried, but abandoned to rot on the battlefield for having been a traitor. This is in contrary to the law of the gods that dictates people to bury their loved ones to free the deceased souls.
3 Antigone vows that she is going to burry Polynieces’ body in defiance to Creon’s decree. Antigone argues that the gods’ laws gives her responsibility of burying her brother Polynieces, to free his soul. Ismene, on the other hand, declines to support Antigone because she, Ismene, fears the death penalty (Goheen 13).This gives a melodramatic twist to the normal ways of burial the people would expect of him. Creon gives warning that whoever touches or buries Polynieces’ corpse is punishable by death
4 Haemon is the son of Creon and Eurydice (Goheen 1). Haemon is engaged to Antigone.
