An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” Literary Analysis
Ambrose Bierce manages to deceive the reader through foreshadowing. He does so by employing allusion, imagery, satire, and unnatural plot elements. Examples of these literary techniques have been analyzed below.
Bierce begins the third part of his story with allusion. Here, he lets the reader know that “As Peyton Farquhar fell straight downward through the bridge, he lost consciousness and was one already dead.” (Bierce 10). This is the first sentence of the first paragraph in the third part of his story. Bierce foreshadows Farquhar’s death early on by letting the reader know that the main character does die. However, since the following sentence is a sharp contrast, it draws the reader’s curiosity to what is just the pain, suffering, and slight hope that Farquhar has before his neck snaps.
