Reflection Excerpt on Chapter Six: The Social and Cultural Setting of the Gospels
A reflection on the cultural and social setting of the gospel and Judaic cultures sheds light on the life in and around Jesus. The issues around family were patriarchal in both Jewish and Greco-Roman societies, where the father was the head of the family. The father was the head of the family, and Judaic mandated the children to obey their parents. Scripts from the Old Testament, especially in Deuteronomy, spelled harsh punishments for disobeying their parents (191). A woman's honor was pegged on childbearing, where the firstborn son was to get most of the inheritance. Jewish boys were circumcised and named on the eighth day after their birth.
Additionally, marriage and weddings were celebrated and were taken as the most important event in the Jewish culture. Such events and cultures around family can be seen in the life of Jesus (192). Jesus was circumcised after the eighth day of His birth in line with the Jewish guidelines and culture (191). Additionally, Jesus performed His first miracle at a wedding in Cana, where He turned water into wine. The honor was brought to Mary for giving birth to Christ Jewish, proving the aspect of a woman's honor coming from her ability to bear children.
Food and meals were another important cultural and social aspect of the Jewish society that can be used to understand Jesus. Jews normally ate twice daily, around noon and later in the evening. The meals mostly consisted of bread, vegetable, fruits, milk products, fish, and wine (194). The position at the eating table signifies a person's significance and social status. The same aspect of communal eating was practiced by Jesus, where He made it a habit to share meals with his disciples. During one of the miracles performed by Jesus, He multiplied two fish and five loaves of bread to feed the poor. The Last Supper is another indication of Jesus's stand following Jewish culture. However, in Luke 14, verse seven, Jesus warns Christians to seek the best seats on the table to avoid humiliation; it turns out they are to be moved to alternative seats.
Work, profession, and trades are other aspects of the Jewish culture. In the traditional Jewish culture, the wealthy citizens lived as royalty while the poor had to toil daily to afford basic life.
