The authors examine the theatrical reconstruction of 17th-century English opera and explain how ignoring the non-musical parts of the early presentations can lead to misconceived notions of the relationships between the different elements. The authors used materials from a variety of fields, including theatre, biography, architecture, configuration, common sense, art, music, general history, and literature, to reconstruct the platform of Dorset Garden Theatre, where each of the operas of Purcell excluding Aeneas and Dido was initially conducted, such as movements, scenery, and costumes. These lack the visual element, which includes scenery, gesture, lighting, dance, and costume, all of which have multiple layers of significance. Hopefully, a few costume and scenic designs, or pictures of them, have been retained. Nevertheless, re-creating the entire one is tough. Analysis
