After reading the provided article, Punishment and Democracy: Disenfranchisement of Nonincarcerated Felons in the United States, by Jeff Manza and Christopher Uggen, it is evident as the levels of criminal punishment continue to rise in the United States, more citizens are feeling disenfranchised because of conviction related to felony charges. The article provides a detailed overview and analysis of the unique practice of felon disenfranchisement in the United States (Manza & Uggen, 2004). Over the last three decades, the population of those convicted of felony charges rose to extraordinary levels, leading to this sanction. Since the United States became a nation, states have punished malefactors by barring them from expressing their fundamental citizenship rights, such as the right to political participation. Accordingly, the article contains graphical presentations of how disenfranchisement influences American Politics.
Summary 2: Choose a SECOND reading assigned this week (or the previous week)- Check the syllabus—and provide a comprehensive summary. Explain the main findings, back up your claims with at least two citations from the reading (Author, page number). (1 full paragraph)
According to the reading Deviance and Crime, crime is any act violating a formal normative code anchored in law. Simple violations do not fit the crime category unless one violates the formal code. In this manuscript, Robert K. Merton (1957) argued that while some deviance benefits society, others put an enormous strain on social life. The application of excessive deviance is a result of inequality. Most theories of deviance also apply to crime, a legally regulated form of extreme deviance. When a society promotes certain goals but provides unequal means of acquiring them, one can expect a conflict between accepted norms and social reality, popularly referred to as strain theory. From the reading, it is definite that deviant behaviors are like norms and values, which are socially constructed and vary over time from society to society. The reading also contains a graphical representation of crimes reported in the United States by the Department of Justice from 1986 to 2005.
