Luis J. Rodriguez started writing Always Running as a 16-year-old gang member of East Los Angeles, but he was unable to complete the story till his son, Ramiro, joined another gang of Chicago at the age of 15 (Rodriguez, 1993). The writer tells the story from the first-person point of view. In Always Running, I read that Rodriguez, in his teenage, tries to stay away from all kinds of negativities such as drug abuse and violence. He knows the difference between right and wrong, and just like Luis J. Rodriguez, it was too difficult for me to handle uncertainties when I came to the United States.
First of all, I could see youngsters using drugs in a large number. Many of my college-fellows urged me to try cigarette and wines, but I refused to do so since I knew the importance of staying healthy. I had to face a lot of problems, and I was always given tough times by my class-fellows.
Secondly, in Always Running, Luis J. Rodriguez is found to be an intelligent person who loves taking part in the Lomas to get what he wants. Then he realizes that being a gang member would not help him achieve success and he escapes the gang. It is all based on his observations, and like the character of this story, I love observing things closely and keenly.
