Different communities and ethnic cultures have rites of passage that one has to undergo to become an adult. In some African communities, circumcision is a rite of passage for the boys, transitioning them into adults after they have withstood the pain. The second example is in the Jewish culture, called bar mitzvah, which is for boys aged 13 years. It is a ceremony that welcomes individuals to adulthood with expectations that they should start behaving as adults.
The Concepts of Pluralism and Assimilation and How They Affect the Rites of Passage of Individuals
The concept of pluralism means there are multiple or more than one ethnic group in a community. These groups coexist harmoniously in the society. As they coexist, each group maintains their cultural values and traditions. The concept of assimilation refers to where the values, customs, languages, and cultural rites of the dominant group in the society are adopted by other ethnic communities. Pluralism affects rites of passage because it helps maintain identity and provides a mode of learning for coexistence. Assimilation, conversely, also affects rites of passage by diluting customs and communities, focusing on the dominant group's rite of passage as opposed to their traditional rites.
