Supreme Court rejects final Trump election challenge is an article by Pete Williams, published by NBC News on 8th March 2021. Williams is a correspondent at NBC News and primarily works on Supreme Court cases and the news from the Justice Department. It outlines the events that followed after the recent presidential election, where Trump lost to Democrat candidate Joe Biden. The article reveals that Trump had challenged the rulings of the lower courts at the Supreme Court. Trump wanted the results nullified because of “handling of mail-in ballots” (Williams, 2021).” The author outlines that the Court embraced its normal practice of announcing rejection using a one-line order comment. Republicans led by Trump argued that states where Joe Biden won, had multiple discrepancies, hence the need to overturn the elections. The affected states in the lawsuit included Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Georgia, which arguably influenced the election outcomes in favor of Joe Biden. The author alludes that the state of Texas did not embrace a legal interest in “how other states conduct their elections,” an argument the Court exploited when disregarding the lawsuit.
It is important to note that presidential election petitions sometimes end up in the Supreme Court. In fact, there is a landmark ruling that addressed the recount dispute involving Al Gore and George W. Bush (Berke, 2001). The Courts ordered presidential ballots recounting in the State of Florida, which was considered a swing state. This was not the case in Trump and his allies’ lawsuit.
