Fieldwork Writing Assignment:
Multimodal Letter to Your Younger Self
Your assignment this week is to write a letter to yourself as a younger person— perhaps as a youngster starting middle school; perhaps as a freshman entering high school; perhaps as a young person on the brink of some other major life transition. Like in other autoethnographic writing, this task involves writing about the past with the knowledge of the present.
This letter should be written in an informal and authentic tone (because, after all, you’re writing to yourself). It is important that you use your own true voice; your letter should sound uniquely like you.
Prewriting Strategies: things to help you think
Think about yourself at a particular age… 6, 10, 12 ? Then think about how you have changed and grown since that age. What would you do differently? What would you change if you had the chance?
Think about the tone of voice you use and the compassion you have for others who are struggling witha major decision or life Be kind to yourself. Speak to yourself as a caring adult giving advice to a child.
Consider the life lessons you’ve learned that resonate with other What mistakes did you make? Do you need to thank your younger self or apologize to your younger self?
Once you've thought about the above questions, write your letter, using any format or organization you want.
Tips:
Pick an age at least 5 years ago or longer.
Zoom in on a couple of key moments. Avoid going through your whole life.
Avoid talk of time travel. We can't go back in time, and this is not fiction.
Don't forget to make this multimodal. What image(s) capture your younger self?
Notes: I'm a female Asian student.
