The causes of death in American have been found to have dramatically changed over the last 100 years. With the improvement of health care, people can get early treatment leading to a reduction in deaths. The changes in the causes of death have been majorly contributed by the change in social morals, sexual behaviors, and intravenous drug use. Environmental and ecological changes have also contributed to the rise in deaths. Pneumonia and influenza were the major causes of death in the early 1900s. In 1918, the number of deaths as a result of pneumonia and influenza were between 50 and 130 million. The introduction of antibiotics led to health improvement. The mortality rate was reduced to almost zero. Towards the end of the 20th century, gastrointestinal infections became more deadly with it being regarded as the top killer. The introduction of better treatment and effective medicine played a great role in the reduction of the death rates as a result of these diseases (Landis & Fisher, 2013).
