How to Confront the Want/Should Conflict
Choices and actions which have immediate benefits satisfy people’s short-term desire are referred to as wants, desires, or wishes, while those taken on the consideration of future beneficial outcomes to one’s life or situation are the ‘should’ choices or decision. Desires have a tendency of outweighing the more reasonable choices and actions in life that are of equally more value than the wants, thus necessitating the need to reduce the influence of wants over the should choices.
One of the proposed interventions for reducing want decisions and encouraging long-term considerations in the event of a want/should conflict is prompt planning (Bitterly, pg.256).
