Hunter (2012) consolidates an argument to provide a close scrutiny of gay marriages. In his assertion, same-sex marriages will influence the law and culture adversely. The present law perceives marriage as a bond, of people with different sexes, in which the husband is regarded as the leader of the institution. He continues to argue that its legalization will “disrupt both the gendered definition of marriage and the assumption that marriage is a form of socially, if not legally, prescribed hierarchy.” The social ramifications are far much deeper. One of the most obvious one is the lack of connection that exists with biological parents and their children. The overall organization in the household-labor issue is bound to be a bone of contention (Hunter, 2012). For instance, the study highlights that the economic differences between individuals in the marriage might compel one to assume the less important activities in the household such as domestic chores. A keener eye will relate to Jowett’s points of arguments. The support arises from the mere fact that he has addressed many aspects of this issue and included specific reasoning points. He has taken into account the current standing of the society and used a thematic analysis procedure to identify the possible view of the same in future (Jowett, 2014). The author provides enormous knowledge to the audience on the reasons gay marriages are a drawback to an evolving generation. In my opinion, his work is a great case for consideration.
The article by Van der Toorn, Jost, Packer, Noorbaloochi and Van Bavel, 2017) is quite elaborative and argues vividly on the religious viewpoint on same-sex marriages. A religious viewpoint can never be convincing without quoting the holy books. In this regard, the authors have expounded on this issue very well with quotations from the books of Genesis and Leviticus and thus, advancing the credibility of the study (Van der Toorn, Jost, Packer, Noorbaloochi, & Van Bavel, 2017). Moreover, there is the inclusion of the possible counter-points to this line of thought exposes the reader a broader perception of the issue at stake. Sexual prejudice and its associated elements such as political and conservative ideologies offers the reader a more diverse approach to this issue. Asia is regarded as a relatively conservative continent when it comes to culture. Most of the countries in this region have stubbornly stuck to their conventional ways despite the proliferation of the Western methods in most countries. Their traditional lifestyle is imminent in the food, dressing, and overall way of life (Wang, Wu, & Shih, 2016). Taiwan is in the Asian continent and thus, serves as an excellent participant in this study. Moreover, this region is composed of governments that are quite reluctant to integrate extraordinary laws. Therefore, this specific focus on Taiwan not only offers the audience a different perspective on the entire issue, but also advances the understanding of how this community perceives such modern trends.
