Personal statement: Psychology
While growing up, I became interested in understanding human behavior after watching a classmate change his behavior dramatically after the loss of his father. Steward was previously jovial, but changed and became quiet and more isolated. Even though, everyone experiences grief people have different ways of handling different situations may affect their psychological wellbeing. The field of psychology interests me as I desire to understand human behavior, and I would like to learn and acquire skills on how to manage and diagnose mental and psychological problems. Besides this being a personal ambition, it is an attempt to reach out to the vulnerable people and promote health, for the often misunderstood people suffering from mental problems.
I seek to pursue a career in clinical psychology, by gaining experience and insights from the academic world and in hospital settings. Even though I would wish to work with children, I have the opportunity to work with adults and this will help me grow professionally. I believe that by focusing more on clinical psychology, it will be possible to utilize research skills in the field of psychology. I enjoyed related courses in sociology and social work, and these compliment psychology and provide useful insights for psychologists. Thus, by working as a clinical psychologist, I hope to collaborate with other like minded professionals to improve understanding of mental health and behavioral problems.
Even though I understand that the requirements for working as a clinical psychologist are rigorous, I am motivated and ready to continue with my education and utilize knowledge gained. Hence, I aspire to focus more on the practical aspects, with research playing a complimentary role. Since, the clinical programs requirements are competitive I will strive to improve both professionally and academically. Furthermore, I am empathetic and social, and these qualities will allow me to contribute positively in psychology courses, and interact freely with people from diverse backgrounds. Nonetheless, this will strictly be professional relationships as this will enable me to collaborate with other professionals and contribute towards improving people’s general wellbeing.
Through focusing on the theoretical and practical aspects of the program, especially on child psychopathology, it will be possible to further my career goal, aligned with personal interests. Furthermore, courses on health psychology will allow me to better understand application of psychology in hospital settings. In essence, I hope to gain knowledge on how to prevent illnesses, and use stress management strategies to promote health.
