Personal Statement: Admission to Doctor of Nursing Practitioner
I'm a practicing nurse with 12 years' experience working in intensive care units in New York, and I'm on course to finishing my post-graduate degree in advanced practice nursing. Although my training has equipped me with care giving skills such as diagnosing, treating and managing various health conditions in primary care settings and intensive care units, my long term career goal is to provide healthcare services in acute and critical care settings. My interest in acute care is informed by the rise in number of patients requiring specialized care for acute and chronic conditions such as end-stage cancer, trauma, and heart disease. Towards this goal, I intend to advance my training further by enrolling for a doctorate in nursing.
I believe that acquiring doctorate-level training in nursing care will prepare me for more complex nurse responsibilities associated with care delivery to acute and chronically ill patients in advanced care settings (American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, 2012). Application of evidence-based nursing care practices is vital in reducing length of patient stay in care facilities and improving patient outcomes. I intend to contribute to better patient outcomes by advancing my knowledge in nursing principles relevant to critical care settings. Acquisition of further training, with focus in the 5 Cs" of nursing, cost-effective care, coordinated care, consistent care, comprehensive care, and collaborative care, will enable me to manage complex patient care in chronic and acute care settings.
