Tesla’s Global Supply Chain
Purpose and Background
Tesla is an American multinational electric car manufacturer and a clean energy company headquartered in Austin, Texas. The company designs, manufactures, and sells electric cars, solar panels, solar shingles, stationary battery energy storage devices, and related products and services. The link to the company’s website is https://www.tesla.com/.
Tesla is a pioneer in the electric vehicle (EV) market because it was the first company to make mass production possible through multiple mega-factories in the United States and other countries, including China. Besides selling cars globally, the company also sources many products worldwide. Before building the Nevada giga-factory, the company sourced batteries from Japan. These batteries were mainly made from lithium metal oxides (Forfar, 2018). Besides these products, Tesla manufactures its products using raw materials mostly imported from other countries. Examples include gold sourced from over a hundred countries on multiple continents. The sources of tin and tungsten are Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Burundi, Russia, Venezuela, and the UK. Tesla also engages in industry collaboration with peers and partners to ensure the supply chain runs smoothly.

The company has built over 50000 superchargers. As such, it owns and operates the most extensive fast-charging network globally. Based on the distribution of the charging stations, Tesla automatically finds and suggests the best routes and the nearest charging stations along the way. This action helps prevent range anxiety among the drivers. Tesla has remained resilient in crises, especially the recent COVID-19. Even though sales and revenues declined, the global supply chain for critical components was the most affected, meaning the company could not produce enough to meet the existing demand.
